My phone rings. I don’t recognise the number but I answer it. There is a few seconds pause and a man with an Indian accent is telling me what business he is calling from.
The name of the business is totally unintelligible to me, and during the pause while I am attempting to understand what he said, he is diving full on into the script.
I don’t know who my current electricity supplier is. I just switch the light switch on and I have light. The owner of the house may know who supplies the electricity but she is out at the moment and I doubt that she would want to answer that question anyway.
That guy has spent several minutes talking with me on the phone and I haven’t given him anything.
And worse still, I am asking him to remove me from his calling list.
As I hear him hang up the phone, I begin wondering how safe other people who speak with an Indian accent in Australia would be. I imagine that many people feel annoyed at receiving calls like this on an almost daily basis.
I feel triggered to some extent at hearing the sound of some person speaking with an Indian accent.
I know of many people who are angry about receiving these calls, and I have concern for the safety of members of the public who speak with that accent.
An innocent person just may happen to trigger somebody who is somewhat uninhibited after having a few drinks, and that innocent person could be injured as a result.
In this day and age we have so many rules and regulations that are supposed to be for our safety. I wonder what we can do to keep these innocent people safe. Most of them had no part in the telemarketing.
